Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced that foreign nationals looking to immigrate to Canada will now have the option to demonstrate their English proficiency using the TOEFL Essentials test.

What is TOEFL Essentials?

It is a short, 1.5-hour English test designed to be modern, flexible, and practical. Similar to CELPIP and IELTS, TOEFL Essentials is also designed to assess the listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills.

What you need to know

TOEFL Essentials will be accepted for all of Canada’s major economic immigration streams, including:

•        Express Entry Programs

o       Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

o       Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

o       Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

•        Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP)

•        Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)

IRCC is yet to announce official scores for TOEFL Essentials

IRCC has not yet announced when the test will become acceptable, but will issue an official publication on their website to inform the public when and where the test will be accepted.
