HIGHER FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR UK STUDENTS AND SHORTER POST-STUDY VISA DURATION
Following the new financial rules implemented by the UK Home Office on November 11, 2025, international students who intend to study in the United Kingdom will now need to show evidence of having £1,529 per month for living costs if studying in London, and £1,171 per month if studying elsewhere in the UK, for up to nine months. The maximum amount that can be offset for pre-paid accommodation will also increase to £1,529.
According to the UK Home Office, these changes are aimed at ensuring that students have sufficient funds to support themselves during their studies and to reflect the rising cost of living across the country.
In addition, the UK government announced changes to the Graduate Route, effective January 1, 2027. Students who complete an eligible UK bachelor’s or master’s degree will now receive 18 months of post-study work permission, down from the previous two-year allowance. PhD and other doctoral graduates are unaffected and will continue to receive three years of permission. These changes will not apply to students applying for the Graduate Route before 1 January 2027.
The Home Office stated that these measures are part of the wider immigration framework outlined in the 2025 Immigration White Paper and aim to balance international student access with economic and immigration priorities. Students are encouraged to review the new rules and ensure they meet all financial and visa requirements before submitting their applications.
Further updates and guidance will be provided once the Home Office has completed a detailed analysis of the full Statement of Changes affecting international students.
