U.S. EMBASSY WARNS NIGERIANS AGAINST VISA FRAUD, THREATENS PERMANENT BANS

Abuja, Nigeria — December 16, 2025 — The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a stern warning to Nigerians about the severe consequences of visa fraud, emphasizing that providing false information or submitting fake documents during the U.S. visa application process could result in a lifetime ban from entering the United States.

In a statement posted on the embassy’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, officials stressed that “visa fraud has serious consequences,” and that lying or presenting fraudulent documents under U.S. immigration law can lead to permanent visa bans.

The cautionary message was issued as part of ongoing efforts to discourage falsification and misrepresentation in visa applications — a practice that can permanently damage an applicant’s ability to travel to the U.S. in the future. The embassy reiterated that honesty and accuracy in the visa process are crucial, and urged applicants to strictly adhere to the rules.

The warning coincided with a diplomatic engagement between U.S. Ambassador Richard Mills and Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, where discussions focused on bilateral cooperation and shared interests between the two nations. Despite the stern message on fraud, the embassy affirmed that the United States remains committed to strengthening its partnership with Nigeria.

Experts say such warnings serve as a reminder that attempts to deceive immigration authorities are taken seriously under U.S. law and can have lifelong repercussions for visa applicants.
