Canada Increases Study Permit Financial Requirements for International Students Starting September 1, 2026
Canada has increased the amount of money international students must demonstrate for living expenses when applying for a study permit. The new financial requirement takes effect September 1, 2026, and applies to new study permit applications submitted on or after that date.
International students planning to study in Canada will need to show more funds to cover their living expenses as the Canadian government updates its annual cost-of-living requirement.
According to the latest guidance from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), a single international student applying to study in any Canadian province or territory except Quebec will now need to demonstrate CAD $23,448 for one year of living expenses, excluding tuition fees and transportation costs.
The new requirement represents an increase from the previous threshold of CAD $22,895, which applied to applications submitted between January 1, 2025, and August 31, 2026.
New Canada Study Permit Proof of Funds Requirement for 2026
The updated financial requirements apply to international students and accompanying family members.
For applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026, the required funds for living expenses are:

These amounts apply to study permit applicants intending to study in all Canadian provinces and territories except Quebec.
For example, a student travelling to Canada alone must demonstrate at least CAD $23,448 in living expenses for the first year.
A student travelling with two family members must demonstrate CAD $35,888 for living expenses.
How Much Has Canada’s Student Financial Requirement Increased?
The latest increase is part of Canada’s annual adjustment of the financial requirement for international students.
For a single applicant, the requirement has changed as follows:
- Prior to 2024: CAD $10,000
- 2024: CAD $20,635
- 2025–August 31, 2026: CAD $22,895
- From September 1, 2026: CAD $23,448
This means the requirement for a single student has increased by CAD $553, or approximately 2.4%, compared with the previous threshold.
Compared with the CAD $20,635 requirement introduced in 2024, the new 2026 threshold is CAD $2,813 higher, representing an increase of approximately 13.6%.
Important: The $23,448 Does Not Include Tuition
One of the most important points for prospective international students is that the new amount is not the total amount of money required to study in Canada.
IRCC states that students must demonstrate sufficient funds to cover:
- Tuition fees
- Living expenses
- Transportation to and from Canada
- Living expenses for accompanying family members, where applicable
The CAD $23,448 figure covers the prescribed living expenses for one student for one year. Tuition and transportation costs must be demonstrated separately.
For example, if a student’s first-year tuition is CAD $25,000 and the student is travelling alone, the student would need to account for at least:
CAD $25,000 tuition + CAD $23,448 living expenses + transportation costs
The actual amount required could therefore be significantly higher depending on the student’s institution, program, location and travel arrangements.
What Proof of Funds Can International Students Provide?
IRCC allows applicants to provide different forms of evidence demonstrating that they have sufficient financial resources.
Examples include:
- Canadian or foreign bank statements
- Proof of a Canadian bank account
- Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC)
- Student or education loan
- Scholarship documentation
- Proof of tuition or housing payments
- Pay stubs
- Evidence of employment
- Financial support from a parent or another person
- Rental-property income
- Pension-related financial documents
IRCC also says applicants may need to provide evidence showing the source of funds. For example, bank statements may need to be accompanied by documentation demonstrating whether the money came from employment income, savings or transfers.
IRCC Will Assess the Source of the Money
Having the required amount in a bank account is not necessarily the end of the financial assessment.
IRCC says officers will assess both the amount of funds available and their source, and applicants must demonstrate that the funds will remain available throughout their studies.
For programs lasting more than one year, applicants must also explain how they intend to finance the full duration of their studies.
For example, students may provide evidence of a multi-year scholarship or documentation showing that their parents or other financial sponsors have the financial capacity to support them.
What About Students Applying to Study in Quebec?
The figures above do not apply to Quebec.
International students intending to study in Quebec must obtain a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) and demonstrate that they can financially cover the costs established by Quebec’s immigration authorities.
Students planning to study in Quebec should therefore check the latest financial requirements applicable to their CAQ and study permit applications.
Why Is Canada Increasing the Proof-of-Funds Requirement?
Canada reviews its international student financial requirement annually to account for changes in the cost of living.
The financial requirement is intended to ensure that international students have adequate resources to support themselves while studying in Canada rather than relying on employment to meet their basic expenses.
IRCC has previously explained that higher financial requirements are intended to help prevent international students from becoming financially vulnerable or exposed to exploitation.
The government has also indicated that the financial requirement is updated annually based on cost-of-living data.
What International Students Applying for Canada Should Do
Students planning to submit a Canadian study permit application from September 1, 2026 should review their financial documents carefully before submitting their applications.
Applicants should ensure that they can demonstrate sufficient funds for:
1. First-year tuition
2. Living expenses
3. Transportation to and from Canada
4. Accompanying family members, if applicable
Students should also ensure that their financial documentation clearly explains the source of their funds.
