THE U.S. ANNOUNCES NEW VISA POLICY FOR NIGERIANS

The United States Department of State has updated its non-immigrant visa policy for Nigerian citizens. Effective immediately, as announced on July 8, 2025, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to Nigerians will now be single-entry and valid for only three months. However, any U.S. visas issued before July 8, 2025, will remain valid according to their original terms.

According to the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, this adjustment is part of a global visa reciprocityprocess, which aims to ensure all countries align with 3consistent security and immigration standards. These policies are regularly reviewed and may be changed at any time, including adjustments to visa validity and entry limits.

The U.S. government clarified that this decision is not targeted at Nigeria specifically but is part of a broader global standard. It emphasized that the update is intended to protect the integrityof the U.S. immigration system, based on technical and security benchmarks such as:

  • Issuing secure travel documents with verified identities
  • Managing visa overstays more effectively
  • Enhancing information sharing about criminal and security matters

Despite the tighter restrictions, the U.S. reaffirmed its commitment to a strong and respectful relationship with Nigeria. The embassy praised Nigeria’s immigration and security reforms and confirmed ongoing collaboration to help Nigeria meet global best practices.
