UK REDUCES POST-STUDY VISA DURATION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS.

The UK government has announced a significant policy change, reducing the post-study stay period for international students. According to the UK Home Office, effective January 1, 2027, the Graduate visa duration will be cut from two years to 18 months, limiting the time foreign graduates can remain in the UK after completing their post-secondary education.

Under the new law, students who apply for a post-study visa on or before December 31, 2026, will still receive two years, while those applying on or after January 1, 2027, will receive 18 months. International students who graduate with a PhD or doctoral qualification are not affected by this new law and will continue to enjoy a three-year post-study stay. The post-study visa cannot be extended, but holders may switch to other visa categories, such as the Skilled Worker visa. The policy follows data showing that many foreign graduates were not securing graduate-level jobs as intended.

Furthermore, the UK will introduce stricter English language requirements for foreign students entering for study, work, or settlement. These measures come amid a fluctuating trend in international enrolments, following January 2024 immigration reforms that restricted students from bringing dependents, except those in postgraduate research or government-funded programs.

Despite previous declines, Home Office data indicate a rebound in 2025, with study visa issuance increasing by 18% in the first half of the year compared to 2024, suggesting renewed interest among foreign students pursuing education in the UK.
